How much cash can you carry?

There is no limit on the amount, the obligation is to declare rather than to stay below a cap. Declare NZD 10,000 or more on entry to New Zealand.

Required for NZ$10,000 or more in cash, or the foreign equivalent, carried into New Zealand. You must also speak to a Customs officer on arrival.

Taking cash out

Reporting threshold. Carry what you like, declare above this.

The same report is required on the way out. It can be filed online or on paper.

How to declare

Use the Border Cash Report (NZCS 337).

If you do not declare

Cash may be seized and penalties applied under the Anti-Money Laundering and Countering Financing of Terrorism Act 2009.
