Can Portuguese escudo notes still be exchanged for euro?
No: the deadline has passed. Banco de Portugal stopped exchanging Portuguese escudo banknotes on 28 February 2022. They can no longer be redeemed for euro at face value, though notes in good condition may still have collector value.
Fixed conversion rate
The rate was fixed permanently by Council Regulation (EC) No 2866/98 and never changes: €1 = 200.482 PTE .
Where to exchange
Only the national central bank redeems these, commercial banks and bureaux de change generally will not. See Banco de Portugal for current procedure.
